Bangkok is a city known for its towering skyscrapers, rooftop bars, and observatories. Among them, the King Power Mahanakhon is a highly popular observatory, and for good reason. Having visited many observatories, I can personally say this one stands out and is highly recommended. The Sky Beach Bar is actually part of the Mahanakhon Skywalk, offering a seamless experience.

King Power Mahanakhon Location and Transportation

The King Power Mahanakhon Observatory is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from Chong Nonsi BTS Station. It’s also easily accessible from BTS Asok Station, where many travelers choose to stay. Additionally, it’s connected to BTS Saphan Taksin Station, from where you can catch a shuttle boat to ICONSIAM, making it perfect for a combined visit.

On my visit, I spent time at ICONSIAM and then headed to the Mahanakhon Observatory at around 8 PM.

Admission Fees

The admission fees for the King Power Mahanakhon Observatory are divided into two time slots: daytime and sunset. The sunset time slot is more expensive as it allows you to see the city during the day, at sunset, and at night. Note that if the outdoor rooftop is closed due to weather conditions, you can enter the indoor observatory at a lower price.

  • Daytime (10:00 AM – 3:30 PM): 880 THB
  • Sunset (4:00 PM – 6:30 PM): 1080 THB (includes a digital photo)
  • Junior (ages 3-12) / Senior (60+): 250 THB

(Admission fees are subject to change, so please check the official website or ticketing sites for the latest prices.)

Sky Beach Bar Admission (After 7 PM)

You might wonder if the observatory closes after 7 PM. Actually, the Sky Beach Bar operates from 7 PM until midnight. Although the admission fee remains the same, it includes a complimentary drink ticket. While you won’t see the daytime view or sunset, the additional drink makes this time slot worthwhile.

  • Evening (7:00 PM – 12:00 AM): 1080 THB (includes one drink)

Tickets for evening admission can be purchased on-site at the ticket office.

Pre-purchase admission tickets Information

Given its popularity, the queue for entry can be quite long. However, you can purchase tickets through Klook to enter directly using a QR code, bypassing the wait. Tickets can be purchased on the same day, so it’s a good idea to buy them in advance while heading to the observatory. Please note that the price is split between the observation deck and bar entry around 7pm.

King Power Mahanakhon Entry Experience

I visited at around 8 PM and bought my ticket on-site without any wait, as it was a weekday and past the peak time. The elevator to the observatory is lavishly decorated with displays, creating a dazzling ascent. After reaching the indoor observatory, you can take another elevator to the outdoor area.

King Power Mahanakhon Skywalk

Upon entering the Mahanakhon Skywalk, you’ll immediately notice the open-air space, unlike other observatories where you look through glass windows. The unobstructed view of Bangkok feels more vibrant and immersive.

Glass floor at Mahanakhon Skywalk

One highlight is the Skywalk, a glass floor section where you can see straight down. Even if you’re not afraid of heights, this can be quite an exhilarating experience. You’ll need to wear shoe covers and cannot carry phones or cameras onto the Skywalk.

There’s also a tiered seating area where you can relax and enjoy the view. It’s fun to spot landmarks you’ve visited, like ICONSIAM. I found the evening breeze at the high altitude to be pleasantly cool, a nice contrast to the hot daytime weather.

For photography enthusiasts, it’s best to visit before it gets too dark. While I used an iPhone 14 Pro, the photos turned out darker than expected.

Sky Beach Bar and Menu

Entering after 7 PM, I received a complimentary drink ticket and opted for one of the more expensive cocktails. Enjoying a delicious cocktail while taking in the view made for a memorable experience.

In summary, the King Power Mahanakhon Observatory offers a unique and immersive experience with its open-air design. Next time, I hope to visit earlier to see Bangkok during the day and at sunset. If you’re planning a trip to Bangkok, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary.
