Are you looking for Coin Laundry on Khao San Road? If you’re traveling abroad for more than a week, laundry is almost a necessity, especially in Southeast Asia like Thailand where you sweat a lot. So I looked around my hostel, New Siam Riverside, near Khao San Road, to see if there was a laundry service nearby, and I found it: Maru Laundry.

Maru Laundry : Coin Laundry on Khao San Road

The location : Coin Laundry on Khao San Road

Maru Laundry is located just off the center of Khao San Road, close to the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

MARU Laundry coin-operated laundromat

I liked that they had free wifi for people to use while waiting for their laundry.

What I didn’t like was that there was an air conditioner and a fan inside the laundromat, but because it was so late in the day when I visited, the air conditioner wasn’t working, so it was a bit hot inside the laundromat as well as outside.

Wash and dry all in one

One of the features of this laundromat is that the washer and dryer are all-in-one. And what I liked about this is that if the washing and drying were separate. You’d have to stop by again when you’re done washing and move it to the dryer. But you don’t have to do that. Normally, you might be worried that it wouldn’t dry properly. Because it’s all-in-one, but since it’s a large commercial machine, it dried very well. The store emphasized that it was imported from Japan.

Price / Detergent Automation

The laundromat had a total of four machines. You can choose from 4 different types of laundry, including those that can wash and dry at the same time: regular, small loads, or just wash or dry. The time required for each option is also listed separately.

The price is displayed as an LED below, as shown in the photo. There is also a coin changer inside the laundry where you can exchange bills. The prices were not cheap, ranging from 100 baht to 120 baht for washing and drying at the same time.

Note that there was a larger capacity machine on the far left, which was a bit more expensive than the regular capacity machine in the photo.

And there was no extra cost for detergent because the machine automatically added detergent and fabric softener. I could leave the fabric softener out if I didn’t want it.

How to use it

  1. I don’t know if it’s because of COVID-19, but there was a feature to sanitize the washer before washing. Just close the washer, press the red button, and it will sanitize for 2 minutes.
  2. Load your laundry. select the course you want. And add the appropriate amount of fabric softener. (if you don’t want to add fabric softener, you can press the No softer button)
  3. If you add 10 baht during drying, it will add to the drying time. (With a normal amount of laundry, the default time was sufficient for drying.)
  4. You can take your laundry out after the CD (cool down) is complete. (Please note that you should never touch the washing machine during the CD, see below).

The detailed instructions are displayed in English at the laundromat. And it took a little longer than the time shown on the LED because of the CD (cool down) time after washing. If you’re going to be spending time elsewhere while your clothes are being washed. You might want to add a few extra minutes to account for that. I grabbed a beer from the live bar next door while my clothes were being washed.

Warning : cd(Cool Down)

When the wash and dry are done and the time is up, you can’t just take the laundry out, there is an additional CD (cool down) cycle to cool the temperature of the laundry.

First I didn’t even know what CD meant, and I lightly touched the door, which triggered an error and locked the washer. When I looked closely at the washer afterward, I saw a warning that said never touch it during CD!

I called on laundry owner, and she said they would be there at 9:00 a.m. the next morning. Next morning I was able to go to the Laundry and pick up my clothes.

Maru Laundry, a Coin Laundry on Khao San Road. I had the misfortune of receiving my laundry the next day due to a cool-down error, which was embarrassing. But otherwise it was a pleasant coin laundry that I would recommend. If you’re staying around Khaosan Road and need to do your laundry, I’d recommend checking out Maru Laundry.
